Alfred Helstad, 91, a long time Williston resident, passed away Sunday night, May 23, 2010, at the Bethel Lutheran Home in Williston, ND.
Alfred Warren Helstad was born on May 25, 1918 in Ellisville Township near Alamo, North Dakota. He was the youngest son of Bernt and Mina (Ronneberg) Helstad. He was baptized and confirmed at Hauge Lutheran Church, located south of Alamo. His parents were charter members of Hauge. He was a current member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
He attended school through the eighth grade. As a young man, Alfred raised chickens, selling and delivering chickens and eggs throughout Eastern Montana and Western North Dakota.
On December 8, 1946, Alfred married Carrie Iverson of Poulsbo, WA. They returned to North Dakota and began their life together at the farm, south of Alamo. They moved to Williston in December of 1952. Farming and family were Alfred’s lifelong commitments. He loved the farm. They lived on the farm in the summers from springs work through harvest.
Alfred loved his kids and grandkids and the many family gatherings. He loved visitors and the coffee pot was always on. Alfred always enjoyed woodworking and spending time in his shop where he made many clocks and cedar chests for family members.
Alfred entered the Bethel Lutheran Nursing Home in October of 2007. He and his family were very appreciative for the care and comfort he received from the staff of Legacy Square.
Surviving Alfred are his three sons: Steve, Rod (Valli) and Leon (Dawn) all of Williston; one daughter, Linda (Carroll) Paulson of Cartwright; eight grandchildren: Scott and Matthew Helstad of Grand Forks, ND, Michele Thomte of Crosby, ND, Jessica (Jeremy) Kruse of Dickinson, ND, Josh (Shelly) Paulson of Cartwright, Jeremy (Brooke) Paulson of Cedar Falls, IA, Jeff (Kim) Paulson , and Jonathan (Breanna) Paulson all of Williston; numerous great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Alfred was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie (Nov. 14, 2000), his parents, two brothers, Neol and Berger, and two sisters, Ida who died at age 18 and Minnie Skaare.

His funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday Morning, May 27, 2010, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Williston, Rev April Peterson will officiate.

Friends may call at the Everson Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 26th, from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM and for the hour preceding the service at the church on Thursday.

Interment will follow at River View Cemetery in Williston.
