Betty Hager, 88, a longtime Williston resident, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at her home in Williston, ND.
Betty Ebach was born November 11, 1921 in Balta, ND, one of eleven children born to Paul and Francis (Kurtz) Ebach. Betty grew up on the family farm and was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church Balta, North Dakota.
After their schooling Betty and her sister set off to see the world, and Betty came to be a nanny for a family in Pontiac, MI. A young man, from her Balta days, continually wrote Betty encouraging her to return to the area.
Betty married Nicholas “Nick” Hager on October 30, 1944 at the Catholic Church in Balta, ND. To this union five children were born: Nick Jr., Jim, David, Patty and Janet.
In the mid 1950's the family made their way to Williston. For over twenty years Betty worked at MDU, while all the time creating a loving home for her family.
Betty was a master gardener and raised many a vegetable garden through the years. She enjoyed canning, was a great cook and a wonderful baker. She was an exercise enthusiast and touched her toes 25 times a day, something she did religiously until her death. She also enjoyed her walks outdoors.
Betty was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Betty and Nick traveled to six European countries, Mexico, Canada, Alaska and the continental United States with the exception of four states, but Betty’s favorite place in this world was in her garden.
Surviving Betty are her five children, Nick Hager, Jr. and wife, Mary, and daughter, Stephanie, of Lake Havasu, Arizona, Jim Hager, sons, Paul (Jessica) and Eric, of Fargo, ND, David Hager and wife, Colleen, and daughters, Jennifer and Melissa, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Patty Hanson and husband, Bruce, and son, Jake, and daughter, Nicolette, of Casper WY, and Janet Stenehjem and husband, Bob, and sons, Darren and Brady (Bekki), and daughter, Lisa, all of Williston; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters Catherine Schwan and Lena Schwan, both of Sacramento, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Nick; parents; brothers, Tony, Joe, Paul, John, and Linus Ebach; and three sisters, Walburga Ripplinger, Mary Lemer and Helen Haberlack.
