Alvin Herland, 81, of Williston, formerly of the Alamo area, passed away Monday afternoon, June 14, 2010, at the Rock View Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home in Parshall, ND.

Alvin was born July 31, 1928, to Berger and Inga (Midtomme) Herland in Wildrose, ND. He was raised and educated in the Alamo area and attended Liberty School.

He was united in marriage to Ruby Schmidt on December 6, 1958 at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Williston. The couple made their home in Williston for a short while before moving to Glendive, MT.

Alvin was a mechanic in the oilfield, working on all kinds of engines and oilfield related equipment. He worked for several years at Suhr Transport in Glendive. Alvin returned to the Alamo area in 1973 and began farming with his brother LeVern. He and his brother continued to farm until Alvin’s health started to fail. Ruby and Alvin moved to Williston in 2008.

Alvin was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, where he served on the church board, and the Moose Lodge. He also served on the Alamo School board, Alamo Farmers Elevator and Station board and the Garnet Township board. Alvin had a love for visiting.

Alvin is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruby of Williston, ND; one brother, LeVern Herland of Alamo, ND; his children, Perry Herland and his wife, Sandi of Olympia, WA, Rick Herland and his wife, Claire Ann of Thompson, ND, Wade Herland and his wife, Wendie of Farr West, UT and Scott Herland and his wife, Brenda of Parshall, ND; his grandchildren, Justin and his wife, Sarah, Kylie, Vasha and Mike Herland; six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Berger and Inga Herland; one brother, Bernard; two grandchildren, Eric and Neely; one great-grandchild, Eric.

His funeral will be celebrated Saturday afternoon, June 19, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church in Alamo, ND. Rev. Dan Maurer and Pastoral Assistant Kathy Paulson will officiate.

Friends may call at the Everson Funeral Home of Williston Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., and Saturday at the church for the hour preceding the funeral.

Interment will follow in the Skabo Lutheran Churchyard Cemetery north east of Alamo.
