  Thomas "Homer" Holmes

Birth Date: January 21, 1969
Place of Birth: Williston, North Dakota
Date Departed: August 7, 2009
Resided: Williston, North Dakota
Age: 40

Tom “Homer” Holmes, 40, of Williston, ND passed away on Friday, August 7, 2009 in Williston from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Thomas “Tom” James Holmes was born January 21, 1969 in Williston to James and Janet (Etzel) Holmes. Tom, known as “Homer” to his friends, grew up on the family farm north of Williston. He attended Twin Lakes School, riding the bus to and from school. He would have the bus driver drop him off early on the route so he could walk alongside the creek to their farm home, thinking about fishing and hunting while he walked.

After graduating from Williston High School with the Class of 1988, he jumped into work in the oil industry, although he was employed by a concrete business for several years. Like many he started at the bottom, eventually working his way up the ladder until he was a company man/consultant. He put in fifteen years with Pool Well Services and was with Petroleum Experience at the time of his death. During his many years in the industry he taught many a young man, in a straight-forward way, how things were done in the oilfield, and many of those grateful individuals have also moved up and are teaching others.

While a young man Homer raised and showed steers at 4-H sales and did land judging, also with 4-H. He helped his dad around the farm, and was still working cattle all these years later.

In 1994 Tommy met Dorinda Hammer through friends, and on June 7, 1997 they were united in marriage at the First Lutheran Church in Williston. The couple has made Williston their home these many succeeding years.

Homer enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and four-wheeling with his family, especially with his grandson, Brenden. He was fond of his friends and enjoyed simply hanging with them or playing cards, darts or shooting pool.

He is survived by his wife, Dorinda, of Williston; his daughter, DanaLee While (Jake Morris) of Williston and her two children, Brenden and Kaitlyn “Little Piglet”; two stepchildren, Jarrette Hammer and his daughter, Eleanora, of Bismarck and Kristen Hammer and her daughter, Emly Korner of Bismarck; his mother, Janet Holmes of Williston; numerous cousins; and several aunts and uncles.

Preceding Homer in death were his father, James Holmes; his grandparents; an aunt, Barb Carns; and an uncle, Leonard Etzel.

The Everson Funeral Home of Williston is caring for the family.
