  Almer Joseph Rutz

Almer Joseph Rutz was born on March 17, 1923 in Williston, ND, the son of Joseph and Mary (Redfern) Rutz. He moved to Minot, ND with his parents and graduated from Minot High School in 1942. Almer served in the Army during WWII.

Almer was united in marriage to Janet Lila Marshall on April 3, 1943 in Wolf Point, MT. To this union were born three children, Carolee, Richard, and Susan. They were married for 65 years. Janet passed away March 24, 2008.

The family made their home in Minot, ND where Almer worked as a machinist for the Great Northern Railroad for thirteen years. They moved to Riverdale, ND in 1955, where they lived for 47 years. While in Riverdale, Almer worked for the Army Corp of Engineers at the Garrison Dam Hydroelectric Power Plant for thirty-three years. At the Garrison Dam, Almer held various positions and was Superintendent of Operations of the power plant for nine years.

Almer was a member of the American Legion and Elks Club. Throughout his many years, he enjoyed golfing, bowling, boating, go-kart racing, gardening, and helping his son-in-law (Gordon Brokaw) at the farm. He was known as an inventor and one of his last projects was the development of a wind turbine.

He and Janet moved to Williston, ND in 2002 to be closer to their youngest daughter. They made their home at the Briarwood.

Almer's loving family includes his children, Carolee (Lauri) Ayala of Lemon Grove, CA, Richard (Glenda) Rutz of Cologne, MN, and Susan (Gordon) Brokaw of Williston, ND; nine grandchildren, Scott Davidson, Brian Davison, Rebecca Darshay, Jeff Havens, Arnold DenBeste, Laura Holland, Kate Brokaw, Jacob Brokaw, and Emily Brokaw; as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

His wife, parents and sister, Marie Hughes, preceded him in death.

His funeral will be celebrated Saturday morning, May 23, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Everson Memorial Chapel in Williston. Pastor Steve Norby and Pastor Tom Karp will officiate

Friends may call at the Everson Funeral Home of Williston Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time service.

Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
